Meta Removes Underage Accounts in Australia
Australia became the first nation to enforce such a prohibition on December 10, barring children under 16 from creating or maintaining accounts on major platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, and others.
In a blog post released Sunday, Meta detailed that between December 4 and 11 it removed 330,639 Instagram accounts, 173,497 Facebook accounts, and 39,916 Threads accounts.
“We call on the Australian government to engage with industry constructively to find a better way forward, such as incentivising all of industry to raise the standard in providing safe, privacy-preserving, age-appropriate online experiences, instead of blanket bans,” the company said.
The tech giant emphasized its commitment to complying with the law but reiterated its “concerns about determining age online without an industry standard.”
